Learning Support

The Learning Support Department is situated in the Learning Hub. It is led by the Director of Learning Support (SENDCo and attendance), Mrs S Jackson, with the support of a second SENDCo Mrs Cayla Blackbeard (Mrs M Jones - on Maternity Leave). There are a number of staff within the department that includes full and part time teaching assistants, the Learning Zone Manager and administration support. The role of the department is to support the learning and progress of those students who have an identified special educational need and to help remove any barriers to learning that they might experience. We recognise that all students may need additional help or support at some point in their secondary school education and we aim to put that support in as it is needed.

We provide a number of interventions to support students who face barriers to their learning through a special educational need and these include interventions for spelling, reading, numeracy, speech and language difficulties, nurture support, social skills programmes and behaviour and attendance support programmes.

All students who are on the special educational needs register have a provision map and a one page passport which is sent to all teaching staff in order that the needs of the student is met in the classroom. These are regularly reviewed with parents, usually at a parents evening by a SENDCo. Students may go on and off the register following each assessment point and parents will be contacted either via email, phone or letter if their child goes onto or off the register.

All students on the register have a ‘passport’ which identifies the student’s strengths, areas of need and strategies to support the child which are distributed to all teachers.

Access arrangements for GCSE exams are tested for at the end of Year 9 / beginning of Year 10 by a qualified assessor. Students are identified for these through regular reading and spelling tests, classroom teachers and written work.

The school is supported by a number of outside agencies which include educational psychology, specialist teachers, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, CAMHS outreach, family resilience and Aspire Pupil Referral Unit.
