English

English at Chiltern Hills Academy develops the core skills students need to communicate clearly, think independently and engage with the world around them. Through reading, writing and discussion, students build confidence in expressing ideas, understanding others, and using language with accuracy and purpose.

In English, students are supported to:

  • Make strong progress within an inclusive learning environment that supports all students
  • Speak clearly and confidently using Standard English, explaining ideas and building on the contributions of others
  • Ask questions, justify their thinking and develop understanding through discussion
  • Read fluently and engage with a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Develop a habit of reading for pleasure to support vocabulary and wider knowledge
  • Write effectively for different purposes, including narrative, descriptive and analytical work
  • Structure and organise ideas clearly to support both spoken and written communication
  • Reflect on and improve their own work through evaluation and feedback
  • Build and apply subject-specific vocabulary with increasing accuracy
