Duke of Edinburgh Award at Chiltern Hills Academy

At Chiltern Hills Academy, we are proud to offer our students the chance to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) – a nationally recognised programme that helps young people grow in confidence, independence, and resilience while making lasting memories with friends.

From Year 9 onwards, students can begin their DofE journey and progress through the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, all the way to Sixth Form. Along the way, they’ll build new skills, give back through volunteering, and take part in adventurous expeditions across the beautiful Chilterns and beyond.

Why Take Part?

The DofE is about more than awards – it’s about personal growth and adventure.

Students who take part develop:

  • Character and confidence through new challenges.
  • Teamwork and leadership skills that support both school and future careers.
  • Resilience and independence by facing real-life experiences outdoors.
  • A sense of pride from volunteering and giving back to the community.

Our dedicated DofE Club provides extra support, including weekly meetings, mentoring from older students, leadership opportunities, and school-organised expeditions.

Students complete four sections for each award level:
Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and an Expedition.

DofE Bronze (Year 9 entry point)
  • 3 months’ commitment in each chosen activity.
  • School-led training day.
  • 2-day, 1-night practice and qualifying expeditions.

Each level is designed to be rewarding, challenging, and achievable with the right support.

DofE Silver (Year 10+)
  • 6 months’ commitment across volunteering, physical and skills sections.
  • 3-day, 2-night expeditions.
  • Can be completed without Bronze.

Each level is designed to be rewarding, challenging, and achievable with the right support.

DofE Gold (Year 12+)
  • Minimum 12 months’ commitment.
  • 2 training expeditions plus a residential challenge.
  • 5-day, 4-night final expedition in “wild country.”

Each level is designed to be rewarding, challenging, and achievable with the right support.

DofE Costs

Taking part in the DofE involves a registration fee (£20) and a welcome pack (£23). Expedition costs are managed in partnership with OceanRock Adventure, who provide professional expedition support and equipment such as tents and stoves.

Indicative costs:

  • Bronze: ~£155 (in addition to registration/welcome pack).
  • Silver: ~£242 (in addition to registration/welcome pack).
  • Gold: costs vary depending on the final residential and expedition.

We always aim to keep costs accessible and can offer guidance to families if support is needed.
