Uniform at Chiltern Hills Academy

At Chiltern Hills Academy, we believe our uniform reflects the pride we have in our community. When students wear their uniform, they are ambassadors for our Academy—showing respect for themselves, each other, and the values we live by every day.

How Uniform Helps

Uniform helps us to:

  • Create a strong sense of belonging and community identity.
  • Encourage students to put the needs of the community before fashion or peer pressure.
  • Ensure equality by keeping costs fair and reducing pressure to wear branded or expensive items.

We ask every family to support our expectations so that all students in Years 7–11 wear the correct uniform, both at school and on their journeys to and from the Academy.

Uniform expectations

Students are expected to:

  • Wear their blazer at all times unless permission is given to remove it.
  • Wear a plain white shirt with the top button fastened, and a school tie covering the top button and waistband.
  • Choose either black loose-fitting trousers or a pleated black skirt, worn no shorter than the knee.
  • Wear plain black socks or tights.
  • Wear plain black, polishable, flat shoes in a formal leather/leather-look style.
  • Carry a plain black, navy, or grey sturdy A4-sized school bag or backpack.
  • Present themselves smartly: shirts tucked in, ties neat, skirts unrolled, and blazers on.
  • Attend PE lessons in full Academy PE kit.

Hair, Jewellery and Makeup

  • Hairstyles should be traditional, understated and in natural colours.
  • Hair coverings for religious reasons must be plain black and modest in style.
  • Jewellery is limited to one small stud earring per ear (lower lobe) and a wristwatch (not a smartwatch).
  • No other piercings, tattoos, nail varnish, false nails, or makeup are permitted.

PE Kit

Students must wear the official Academy polo shirt and black shorts/skort/leggings or tracksuit bottoms as specified in our PE uniform guide. Trainers should be supportive and non-marking, and football boots with moulded studs are required for use on the fields and artificial pitch.

Equal opportunities and inclusivity

Our Academy community is diverse, and we celebrate the values, cultures, and faiths represented in our school. The uniform policy applies equally to all students to ensure fairness and inclusion.

  • Sikh students who have been baptised may wear the five articles of faith discreetly and respectfully, with the Kirpan sealed and out of sight.
  • Religious head coverings are permitted in plain black, keeping the tie and shirt visible so all students are recognised as part of Chiltern Hills Academy.
Support for families

We are mindful of affordability and inclusivity in line with statutory guidance:

  • Branded items are kept to a minimum.
  • Second-hand uniform is available from the Shaw Trust charity shop, 33 High Street, Chesham HP5 1BW.
  • Our main supplier is KL Schoolwear (www.klschoolwear.co.uk | orders@klschoolwear.co.uk | 07990 750195).

If you are ever unsure whether an item meets the Academy’s uniform standards, please contact us before purchasing.

Non-compliance

We want every student to feel proud of their appearance and ready to learn. If uniform expectations are not met, we may:

  • Confiscate non-uniform items.
  • Provide a temporary replacement item, where available.
  • Ask students to work in our Reflection Room until the correct uniform can be provided.

These steps are not about punishment, but about fairness and ensuring consistent high standards across our community.

Uniform is part of the way we demonstrate our shared values of honesty, respect, self-discipline and hope. By dressing smartly, students show pride in themselves, their Academy, and their learning.
