Safeguarding Introduction

At Chiltern Hills Academy, nothing is more important than the safety and wellbeing of our students. Every child has the right to grow up safe from harm, and we are fully committed to providing a secure, nurturing environment where every young person can thrive academically, socially and spiritually.

What Safeguarding Means

Safeguarding is about ensuring every student feels safe, supported and able to thrive. This includes:

  • Protecting children from harm.
  • Supporting physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Ensuring safe and effective care.
  • Helping every child achieve their best.

Safeguarding also covers attendance, behaviour, anti-bullying, online safety, health and wellbeing, first aid, school security, and local safeguarding concerns.

Explore the sections below to learn more about the safeguarding guidance, support systems and key information we provide to help keep every student safe, supported and well cared for.

Our Commitment

We follow the statutory guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education (DfE 2024) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (DfE 2023). This means:

  • All staff, governors and volunteers receive safeguarding training and understand their responsibilities.
  • Safer recruitment practices ensure only suitable people work with our children.
  • Policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and shared with staff, families and students.
  • We work closely with Buckinghamshire Safeguarding Children’s Board and local multi-agency partners.

Our site is designed to be as safe and secure as possible, and we listen carefully to our students. Every concern raised is taken seriously.

Our Safeguarding Team

We have a highly trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) team who can be contacted at any time if you are worried about a child.

  • Mrs Jo Conway – Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Ms Anne-Marie Sprenger – Deputy DSL
  • Miss Danette McCowan – Deputy DSL

All members of the Senior Leadership Team, Academic Year Leaders, and Year Leader Assistants are also safeguarding trained.

Safeguarding concerns can be raised by emailing safeguarding@chacademy.co.uk.

Working Together with Families

Our aim is always to work in partnership with parents and carers. There may, however, be rare occasions when we must involve social care or other agencies without parental knowledge, if we believe this is the best way to protect a child.

We encourage everyone – staff, visitors, parents, and students – to share concerns if they are worried about a young person. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Guidance for Visitors and Adults on Site

If you are working at or visiting Chiltern Hills Academy, you play a part in keeping students safe. Please:

  • Report any concerns about a student immediately to a DSL or to safeguarding@chacademy.co.uk.
  • Listen calmly if a student shares something with you, reassure them, and explain you must pass the information on.
  • Never promise confidentiality, never investigate yourself, and never delay reporting.

We also ask visitors to remain alert to signs of radicalisation, bullying, or abuse, and to share any concerns straight away.
