Prevent Duty

At Chiltern Hills Academy, keeping our students safe is at the heart of everything we do. Safeguarding means protecting children from many risks, including the dangers of radicalisation and extremism.

The Prevent Duty is part of the Government’s safeguarding strategy. It helps schools and communities protect children and young people from being drawn into extremist ideas or behaviours, while promoting respect, inclusion, and positive life choices.

Our Approach

We work hard to uphold the 2011 Government Prevent strategy’s three main objectives:

  • Challenge extremist ideas that threaten safety and respect in society.
  • Support individuals at risk, offering guidance and early help where needed.
  • Work with partners, including local authorities and safeguarding agencies, to spot concerns quickly and act responsibly.

Explore the sections below to learn more about the Prevent Duty guidance, support systems and key information we provide to help keep every student safe, supported and well cared for.

Spotting the Signs

Radicalisation can be difficult to identify, but some possible signs might include:

  • Withdrawing from family and friends.
  • Speaking in a way that sounds scripted.
  • Avoiding discussion about their views.
  • Showing sudden disrespect or hostility towards others.
  • Increased anger or secrecy, particularly online.

If you notice these behaviours, it does not always mean radicalisation is taking place—but it is important to raise any concerns so that children can be supported in the right way.
