Child Development at Chiltern Hills Academy gives students an understanding of how children grow, learn and develop from birth to five years. Through the study of health, nutrition, safety and early years development, students gain valuable knowledge and practical skills that can be applied in everyday life and future careers.

Students explore the importance of creating safe, nurturing environments for children while developing confidence, independence and an understanding of the responsibilities involved in caring for others.


In Child Development, students are supported to:

  • Make strong progress within an inclusive learning environment that supports all learners
  • Understand the key stages of child growth and development from birth to five years
  • Explore the health, wellbeing and nutritional needs of young children
  • Develop knowledge of how to create safe environments that support children’s learning and development
  • Understand the importance of play and its role in supporting physical, social and intellectual development
  • Apply practical skills through planning, observation and evaluation activities
  • Explore different approaches to childcare and family life across cultures and communities
  • Develop confidence, independence and responsibility through real-world learning experiences
  • Think creatively, critically and analytically when solving problems and making decisions
  • Use specialist childcare and health-related vocabulary accurately and effectively
  • Work independently and collaboratively to complete practical and written tasks
  • Gain insight into careers within childcare, education, health and early years professions
  • Develop transferable life skills that support personal wellbeing, communication and future employment
