Food Preparation and Nutrition at Chiltern Hills Academy equips students with the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about food, health and wellbeing. Through a combination of hands-on cooking and the study of nutrition, students develop an understanding of how food impacts physical health, culture, the environment and everyday life.

Students learn essential life skills that promote independence, healthy living and a lifelong appreciation of cooking, while exploring cuisines, ingredients and food traditions from around the world.


In Food Preparation and Nutrition, students are supported to:

  • Make strong progress within an inclusive learning environment that supports all learners
  • Develop practical cooking skills through the safe preparation and cooking of a wide range of dishes
  • Understand the principles of healthy eating, nutrition and balanced diets
  • Build confidence in using kitchen equipment, ingredients and food preparation techniques safely and effectively
  • Explore the science of food, including its nutritional, chemical and functional properties
  • Understand how food choices affect health, wellbeing and lifestyle
  • Investigate the environmental, ethical, cultural and economic factors that influence food production and consumption
  • Explore cuisines, ingredients and culinary traditions from different cultures around the world
  • Evaluate and improve dishes using sensory analysis, feedback and reflection
  • Develop independence, organisation and problem-solving skills through practical tasks
  • Use specialist food and nutrition vocabulary accurately and confidently
  • Work both independently and collaboratively to plan, prepare and present food
  • Understand sustainability, food waste and the impact of food production on the environment
  • Explore career pathways and opportunities within the food, hospitality and nutrition industries
