Media

Media Studies at Chiltern Hills Academy helps students understand, analyse and create the media that shapes our daily lives. Through the study of television, film, advertising, social media, gaming, music and print media, students develop the skills to think critically about how media messages are constructed, interpreted and influenced by society.

Students explore how media industries operate, how audiences engage with content and how representation shapes perceptions, while developing their own creative and practical production skills.


In Media Studies, students are supported to:

  • Make strong progress within an inclusive learning environment that supports all learners
  • Develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of a wide range of media texts and platforms
  • Explore how media products are created, distributed and consumed by different audiences
  • Understand how media influences attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and popular culture
  • Analyse representation, media language, audience and industry across a variety of media forms
  • Develop independent viewpoints and informed opinions about contemporary media issues
  • Build practical production skills using industry-standard design, editing and media creation tools
  • Apply creative and technical skills to design and produce their own media products
  • Explore how media reflects social, cultural, political and historical contexts
  • Develop research, planning and evaluation skills through independent project work
  • Use specialist media and theoretical vocabulary accurately and confidently
  • Understand the ethical and moral issues surrounding media ownership, bias and representation
  • Work independently and collaboratively to create, refine and present media projects
  • Gain insight into careers and opportunities within media, journalism, marketing, film, television and digital industries
